My mom and dad are super generous and really big on finding new homes for items they no longer use, and furniture is no exception. My dad had offered me my mother’s old bureau. They were no longer using it, and since it had once belonged to my grandparents, I think he was hoping we would salvage it. Initially, I turned it down. I could not think of a place where we needed a dresser, and our basement has filled up fast over the past year.
When I mentioned to Dave that I had said no to the dresser, he seemed kind of disappointed. He loved the retro style even though the color was totally outdated. Still, we had nowhere to put it. Then, one day while flipping through my HGTV magazine, I stumbled upon an article where somebody had taken an old dresser, removed the legs, and turned it into a TV console. I loved the storage this idea provided as well as the ability to add a pop of color to our super bland gray, black, white, and tan living room. I showed Dave the idea, and he thought my parents’ dresser would be perfect.
Dave removed the legs to make the piece more TV stand height. This was also done partly from necessity as one of the legs was broken. He then roughed up the finish with sandpaper so the paint would adhere better to the wood. We agreed that the room needed color and we wanted to go with a deep blue. I decided on Blue Coast from Better Homes and Gardens. The final product did seem a bit more purple-ish than the sample, but I was still happy with it.
It took three coats of paint to get the desired finish. I painted the drawers and Dave painted the frames. We removed the hardware and spray painted it a brushed nickel finish.
The final product looks great, and it even inspired me to purchase some new throw pillows to bring the coastal blues throughout the room. I am looking forward to filling each of the drawers and adding some more storage, and hopefully organization, to my life.
